Office Administrator for St. James' Episcopal Church

St. James’ Episcopal Church, in Alexandria, Virginia ,seeks an office administrator to assist the minister in the daily management of the parish, as well as other administrative duties. 

This position requires a high level of confidentiality, and the successful candidate will be a motivated problem-solver who is a self-starter. The office administrator will be a resource for both members and non-members, and a welcoming, positive presence in the church’s office. This position is responsible for the following key items: 

  • Timely preparation of worship bulletins. 
  • Organizing and updating member information. 
  • Responding to requests via email, telephone, and in-person visits. 
  • Preparing mailings and receiving packages. 
  • Managing phone system and incoming calls. 
  • Managing and ordering office supplies. 
  • Organizing and managing filing system. 
  • Managing and maintaining communications including the parish website, and social media outlets. 
  • Basic financial management duties.
  • Liaison other building users.
  • Coordinating with tradespeople and building maintenance concerns.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Strong writing and grammar skills, including proofreading, and editing. 
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing applications. 
  • Creativity in creating publicity is desirable. 
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including calendaring, and prioritization. 
  • Ability to effectively manage workload in a varied paced work environment. 
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times regarding persons and information. 
  • Knowledge of office etiquette and effective communications skills. 
  • Welcoming disposition 
  • Listening Skills. 
  • Must be a quick learner. 
  • Ability to work well with others in a sometimes-stressful environment. 


Hours: 4 hours/day, 4 days/week. Schedule to be determined in collaboration with the Minister. Lots of flexibility to accommodate family needs.

Compensation: $17-20/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
